Have you ever been saved by cake?
I had high hopes for dinner last night. I was making one of my favorite roast chicken recipes and had been patiently waiting for it aaaaaaallllll week. TJ asked what ingredients I was using and picked out a perfect pairing. We were pretty pumped to park it on the couch and watch the Super Bowl with the kids.
And then, it all went terribly wrong. There are very few times when I can say my dinner truly sucked. I knew the minute I put it in the oven that I’d done something wrong. My chicken looked like a thrown up hair ball. Undeterred, TJ decanted a bottle of Priorat. Surely this would all come together. Right?
Um, no. My chicken was flavorless and dry – like 1950’s mom who can’t cook flavorless and dry. And TJ’s wine was flabby and too tannic and, frankly, unpleasant. It was a double fail. We don’t like to fail at anything, much less a dinner/wine pairing!
So we did what any normal couple would do. We switched to leftover birthday cake, served with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge sauce, paired with Glenmorangie Signet. I’ve got to say, it was one of the best dinners I’ve served in a while!
If you’re stuck at home in the snow with the fixings for cake, but no whisky to serve with it, stop by and see us. We’ll be open regular hours today!
