It’s not every day that a wine comes along that shakes up your perception of a grape or region. Especially not when the grape is widely known and produced in a consistent style throughout a country. But that is exactly what this week’s spotlight wine does!
FitaPreta’s Signature Series is made by winemaker Antonio Macanita, and always consists of small, limited releases designed to test existing norms and explore new directions. The “A Touriga Via Nua” (literally “Touriga Goes Naked”) is made from 100% Touriga Nacional, without any trace of oak use whatsoever. What makes this so interesting is that Touriga Nacional – Portugal’s star grape – almost always takes on heavy oak usage. In this exciting wine, it is completely stripped down so you can taste Touriga Nacional like never before. The result? An incredible wine that stands in its own category.
Full of lush blackberries and raspberries, the wine has a haunting floral aspect of violets and dried roses, with a touch of anise, dried herbs, and wet rocks. In addition to gravelly tannins, this wine has an underlying acidity that helps to lift the dark juicy fruit, and keep it from feeling too heavy. As it’s name would suggest “Touriga Via Nua” comes across as extremely pure. Clean and precise in both flavor and structure, with nothing to hide.
Possibly the most concerning thing about this incredible wine is it’s availability. A very limited release as it is, this wine’s future is also uncertain. Antonio Macanita relies on how well the wines of his Signature Series are received to decide if he should ever make them again. Possibly the last we will see of this wine – ever!
