SPOTLIGHT WINE: 2014 BETZ FAMILY WINERY “BÉSOLEIL” RED BLEND (COLUMBIA VALLEY, WA)
The ease and drinkability of the Rhône varietals – especially the region’s signature Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre blend – is legendary. In the 1980’s a group of American winemakers, nicknamed the Rhône Rangers, popularized the Rhône varietals on the West Coast, and our country has never looked back. California was the first state to get in on the Rhône game, but Washington’s offerings are also first rate juice.
The Betz Family Winery’s “Bésoleil” pays homage to the warm and sunny days in the South of France, and its legendary blends. This wine kicks it up a notch by adding Cinsault and Counoise, two lesser known grapes that play perfect supporting roles to the star power of Grenache, the base wine in this tasty blend. Syrah and Mourvèdre round out the wine with their power and structure.
The Bésoleil may be easy-drinking but it also has depth and elegance to it. It’s got flavors of cherry and red plums, and a distinctive peppery element to the finish. Robert Parker gave this wine 91 points, and ended his review with, “In short, don’t miss a chance to try these wines.”
We would add – don’t miss a chance to try these wines when they are on sale!
