SPOTLIGHT WINE: 1999 GIORGIO PELISSERO “ANNATA” BARBARESCO

1999 GIORGIO PELISSERO “ANNATA” BARBARESCO (PIEDMONT, ITALY)

Nebbiolo is hands-down TJ’s favorite varietal and he has a passion for Barbaresco, which is often considered more approachable and feminine in style than its big brother Barolo. The knock on Nebbiolo is that it can take a long time to be ready to drink, especially Barolo. At lot of us just don’t have the patience to let these wines mellow out.

The Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco is described by TJ as being “gnarly.” It’s more old world and masculine in style, and drinks more like a Barolo than a Barbaresco. But with a vintage of 1999, this Barbaresco has been aging for nearly 20 years and is ready to go. All the time, effort, and waiting have been done for you. Your job is simply to pop it open and pour a glass.

The “Annata” is complex and fruity on the nose, with lots of personality and tannins on the palate. It’s rich with flavors of black cherry, tobacco, and anise. Perfect for this snowy day, or any day.
