From the Vine

SPOTLIGHT: 2014 JEAN DAVID “CUVÉE BEAU NEZ” SEGURET

2014 JEAN DAVID “CUVÉE BEAU NEZ” SEGURET (CÔTES DU RHONE, FR)

This is such a pretty, unassuming wine, that’s it’s easy to miss it’s complexity. “Beau Nez” means beautiful nose, which refers to the rich aromas of black fruit, licorice, and kirsch.

Winemaker Jean David (that’s him on the label with his self-described red nose and red pom pom hat!) was originally hesitant to begin farming organically, but his son convinced him that his wine would be the better for it. Now organically farmed and wild yeast fermented in cement vats with no added sulfites, this wine has found fame thanks to its alluring natural wine appeal. It seems his son was correct after all!

The nose is indeed beautiful, but the flavors are no slouch themselves. It’s reminiscent of spicy black cherry compote, with noticeable acidity and smooth tannins. This wine showcases the best of the Côtes Du Rhone – an enjoyable treasure that lacks intimidation in presentation or price! At just over $20 a bottle, you’ll feel no guilt slurping this one down with slice of pizza!
