From the Vine

SPOTLIGHT: 2009 Lopez Heredia “Viña Cubillo” Crianza (Rioja, Spain) *5R*

After phylloxera decimated the vineyards of France in the mid 19th century, wine negociants (French wine merchants and wholesalers) went looking for new sources of grapes. For many of them, their new go to region became Rioja in Spain, and an international love affair with the wines from this region was born. Today, Riojoa wines are known for their quality and palate-friendliness, especially for those looking for a break from Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lopez Heredia is named for Don Rafael Lopez de Heredia y Landeta, the founder of the winery in 1877, making it one of the three oldest wineries in the region. The winery continues to be family run, and has been producing inspiring wines for well over 100 years.

The Viña Cubillo is made from 65% Tempranillo and 25% Garnacho (Grenache), with a touch of Mazuelo and Graciano to round out the palate. After harvest and fermentation, the wine is aged in barrels for three years, and then aged again in bottle. The result is a deliciously smooth wine that is ready to drink today. This is a perfect pairing for grilled meats, so stock up for Labor Day BBQs and end of the summer grill sessions. At under $30 a bottle, you’ll be mightily impressed with the quality of this legendary wine.
