Red Wine

“Red Red Wine you make me feel so fine.
You keep me rocking all of the time.
Red Red Wine I love you right from the start.
Right from the start with all of my heart.”
– UB40

These may be lyrics from an ‘80’s song, but let’s face it. Red wine stirs this kind of passion in people. At The Urban Grape, we all loved it right from the start with all of our heart, and we continue to love it more every day. There is a moment in every wine drinker’s life where the realization hits – white wine is wonderful and oh so perfect with oh so many things, but red wine…red wine never stops being intriguing, beguiling, elusive and soul satisfying.

Here are some of our favorite red wines at the store right now:

2009 George “Sonoma Coma” Pinot Noir (Russian River)   3R

George Wine Company is literally one person, and his name actually is George. GWC works with five Russian River Valley vineyards to produce single-vineyard and blended pinot noirs. The 2009 Sonoma Coma is 100% Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and is unfined, unfiltered and unpumped. George’s preference is toward low alcohol and low oak flavor, letting the pinot shine through. Always a favorite at UG.

2005 Caparone Cabernet Sauvignon (Pasa Robles)   7R

Dave and Marc Caparone are a father-and-son team focused on full-bodied red wines, made with minimalist techniques that favor tradition over technology. While Caparone focuses on Italian varietals, their “French Camp Vineyard” Cabernet is their star. This Cab is rich and well-balanced with great structure and varietal character. A wine with real aging potential at a great price!

2010 Loca Linda Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)   8r

Loca Linda means Crazy/Beautiful and this environmentally conscious winery packages their wines in lightweight, 1 Liter glass bottles because they believe more wine creates less waste. This nicely bodied Malbec opens with hints of violets, raspberries and cherries giving way to sweet tannins rounding out the finish.

2009 Villa San-Juliette Petit Sirah (Pasa Robles)   10R

The Inaugural 2009 VSJ Petit Sirah benefits from a generous dose of Cabernet Sauvignon (15%). Blueberry and black fruit nose unlock a wine that combines a dark berry attach with an inky, yet velvety consistency. Balanced acid for this varietal supports a long finish, which is sure to please the palate!
