Sweet/Fortified Wine

Sometimes in life, you just stumble into an unexpected great moment, a moment that stays with you your whole life and helps to define your tastes.  For TJ, one of those moments happened a few years ago at a Boston Harbor Hotel Wine Festival dinner.  Hanging around after the dinner, he was invited by Chef Daniel Bruce to taste through a flight of Chateau d’Yquem.  And a love affair with sweet and fortified wines was born.  Look for our sweet and fortified wine seminars to see what all of the fuss is about!

Here are some of our favorite sweet and fortified wines at the store right now:

Angelini Agricola “Pergoal Passito Cent Anni” (Marche)

Azienda Agricola Angelini is located on the hillside of a small farming village within the Marche region of Italy. The Pergola Rosso, known as “Vernaccia di Pergola” by the locals, is an ancient varietal which only grows in this very limited area and is produced by only a handful of wineries. This  Vernaccia di Pergola is an opaque ruby red wine, which is sweet yet balanced with intense flavors and best enjoyed with cookies and cakes.

2005 Dolce Napa Valley Late Harvest Wine (Napa)

Outside of Tokaj or Bordeaux, no winery has produced dessert wines with greater consistency than Dolce, a Napa Valley winery formed by Far Niente. The grapes attain full ripeness before getting concentrated by botrytis cinerea, a mold long associated with the world’s greatest dessert wines. Part of the magic of Dolce, is its ability to age and improve while displaying hints of  pear, peach, and orange rind balanced by more subtle layers of honey and earthy minerality.

2001 Chateau D’Yquem Sauternes (Bordeaux)

Only 10,000 cases were produced of this sweet white Bordeaux gem. The 2001 Yquem reveals a fleck of green in its light gold color. It offers honeyed tropical fruit, orange marmalade, pineapple, creme brulee  and nutty scents. The mouth feel is full-bodied with gorgeously refreshing acidity. This Yquem holds up to the most legendary vintages of the past, and will age effortlessly for 75+ years.
