1999 Drei Dona Magnificat, Emilia Romagna, Italy
This red wine is made from 100% single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged in French barriques for 20 months and then bottled unfiltered. The extremely low yields of this vineyard and the area’s terrior deliver an aging potential of 2-3 decades. The wine is now in its tertiary stage—showing aromas of antiqued black fruits, weathered balsa wood, old leather, sticks, dirt, dust, and farmland. The tannins are remarkably smooth and are still very much intact. The texture of the wine is appropriately rustic and the balance is excellent. Its profile is reminiscent of old-school Bordeaux with a slightly lighter and brighter feel. This is a rare opportunity to experience a very old, high quality wine at an approachable price point. It definitely needs to be drunk within the next 12-16 months.
