SAMsARA is the creation of highly-regarded winemaker Chad Melville and his wife Mary. Under this label, the two produce limited releases of Syrah from distinct microclimates within carefully selected vineyard sites throughout Santa Barbara County.
UG Staffer Ali just got back from a California trip where she got to spend some time in the SAMsARA tasting rooms learning about the wine and the philosophy behind it. We can’t wait to share some of her insider knowledge with you guys!
First and foremost, the pair believes they are winegrowers, not winemakers – meaning they take the utmost care in their vineyards and have a more hands-off approach when it comes time to manipulating the grapes after harvest. This minimalistic style leads them to use techniques such as whole-cluster fermentation, neutral oak, and low sulfur levels which in the end creates a finished wine with incredible balance, poise, and complexity.
While produced in California, SAMsARA certainly has much in common with Old World Style. Plump fruit character leads to a certain austerity to the underlying minerality. Coming through on the nose are smoky blackberry, herbs, and a hint of cola, followed by spiced dark fruit and subtle cherry, with floral and olive nuances. With lively, soft tannins and a lengthy finish, this is complex Syrah is exactly the type of masterpiece Chad Melville is known for.
Having recently left SAMsARA to spearhead his family’s Melville Winery, this will be the last vintage to have Chad’s special touch. Get it while you can by clicking “Buy Now” below!
