2013 SANS LIEGE “THE OFFERING” RED BLEND (SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA)
It’s not surprising that a California winemaker on a “relentless search for independence” would find himself in regions like Paso Robles, Santa Maria Valley, and Santa Ynez. These newer California wine regions are known for breaking all the rules. What’s so great about Sans Liege, and winemaker Curt Schalchlin, is that rule-breaking is steeped in respect for what came before. These wines take the best of the Rhône Valley and re-imagine it for a new generation of wine drinkers.
You know and love Sans Liege because of bottles like Call to Arms and Groundwork – both popular selections at UG. Now it’s time to get to know The Offering, a red blend from Santa Barbara County, made of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Viognier (just 1%!).
There is no better description of this wine than the one on the Sans Liege website:
Running through the kitchen you eye the blueberry pie, steam still rising, on the window sill. Your mom sees the mischievous look in your eye and shoos you away with her dish towel. The pie’s scent mixes with the aromas of rainbow peppercorn, tapenade, and fresh picked strawberrieswhich sit in a bowl on the table. With a screech the screen door slams and you pick up your Schwinn with the new tires and take off. Flying around the corner you get a whiff of the ocean and the seaweed drying on the sand only a few blocks away. You reach the hideout; your friends have already started the game – cards in hand and a pule of beef jerky and tootsie rolls on the table.
This red blend will remind you of the Prisoner’s former glory days, at a price that won’t hold you hostage!
