Dream Staycation

January 13, 2012 by: The Urban Grape

The other day, someone asked me what I miss most about my pre-kids life. Without a doubt, I miss the ability to just wander in my own city and let the day unfold ahead of me. Basically, I miss being able to staycation. That got me thinking about what my perfect staycation day would be.

The start of my staycation would inevitably start in my own bed, where I would wake up on my own, without interruption or someone begging me for a bowl of Cheerios. But I wouldn’t linger too much. After all, I have a day of relaxing ahead of me and I need to get to it.

One thing I’ve really been wanting to do but just haven’t found the time to try, is to hoof it around Boston’s Harborwalk. So tea in hand and pup on the leash, I’d walk from Charlestown to Fort Point and check out all the new sites along the harbor. From there, I can think of no better place to refuel than at Sam’s at Louis. Add a few girlfriends and the scene is set.

Sam’s has a fabulous wine list, off of which I would choose a bracing white wine to get my taste buds salivating. From there I’d feast on the Jalapeño Pretzels and a handful of fries. Next up Sam’s amazing BLT or their Black Peppercorn Burger. Last but not least, the brownie ice cream sundae is my absolute favorite. The food is so satisfying at Sam’s, not to mention the incredible view of the Harbor. It’s a little gem.

From Sam’s I’d toddle over to the ICA for an afternoon of uninterrupted culture. I miss wandering around museums, not having to worry about my two year old rubbing his sticky hands over a valuable piece of art history. I’d need to refuel with a cup of cappuccino while I read a little from my Nook. Uninterrupted, of course.

By this point in the afternoon I’d be missing TJ, so I’d want to be on my way to meet up with him. Champagne would be in order, rosé preferably. And if it’s the Ruinart Rosé, I’d be happiest of all. There’s nothing more gorgeous than that bottle. Maybe we’d meet at the bar at Via Matta (always a fave), or have a rendez-vous at Abe & Louis. There’s nothing like breezing into a bar and seeing your handsome husband sitting there waiting for you. It’s strange how I never meet TJ anywhere anymore, we always arrive together. But not on my staycation!

Why go home and cook when you can just keep the party bus rolling? My staycation dinner would probably be at Bistro du Midi, or maybe Market at the W. I absolutely love the short ribs at Market. No matter the preparation, they are always incredibly rich and sinful. Then again, the duck breast at Bistro du Midi is to die for. It’d be a tough choice, but if we could get a corner table at Bistro du Midi overlooking the Public Garden and the twinkling lights, I’d probably head there.

Last but not least, I’d love to check out Descent at the W or Storyville for some cocktailing and dancing with TJ. A Sidecar in my glass and good bass line pumping would be a perfect way to wrap up this decadent day. Late night dancing is just not something that we get to do enough of lately. Lately as in six years or so.

There’s my perfect staycation day…what would yours entail?

  1. I love this! Mine would include a massage at Bliss and Champagne tea at The Taj.
