GBFB & UG: Because Hunger Doesn’t Take a Summer Break

Hunger Doesn't Take a Summer Break

Another month has come and gone, and UG’s Urban Community Program continues to grow. We are proud to be strengthening the ties between our network of customers and at-risk Bostonians, one community-based organization at a time. And the network IS growing! Last month, 12 other South End businesses helped us collect books and donations for More Than Words. Time and again, South Enders get it done!

For the next two months, The Urban Grape is teaming up with the Greater Boston Food Bank(GBFB) to raise awareness around the issue of food insecurity, especially during the summer months when children who depend on school-based meal programs are on summer break. While so many of us joyfully Instagram pictures of the freshest summer produce available (myself included!), there are many in our community who do not know where their next meal will come from.

GBFB is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. Last year, they distributed 57.7 million pounds of nutritious food to people who struggle to have enough to eat. They are committed to increasing their food distribution to provide at least one meal a day to every person in need across Eastern Massachusetts while supporting healthy lives and communities. The Greater Boston Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization.

For thousands of children who rely on their school’s breakfast and lunch for their meals, summer is no vacation. Families who rely on free and reduced-priced lunches during the school year struggle with the summer meal gap right at the time when donations to GBFB tend to slow.

Hungry kids across Eastern Massachusetts need even more help in the summer, which is why GBFB continues to distribute nutritious food to families in need throughout the summer via their mobile markets, health center produce distributions and even School-Based Pantries in Lawrence, Billerica, and Revere that will remain active throughout June, July, and August.

But, GBFB can’t do it without you.

With your support, thousands of children and families can enjoy summer knowing they can count on the nutritious food provided by GBFB – and you.

Help GBFB at or join us on August 24th for a special volunteer opportunity with other Urban Grape customers, employees, and owner Hadley Douglas! From 9:30 to 12, we will be sorting food and helping the vital daily operations of GBFB. Please email Hadley if you’d like to reserve your place with the volunteers!
